You As the Therapist: Working with Trans & Non-Binary Folks, Part One

Many transgender and non-binary people struggle to find therapists that are affirming of their identities, and even clinicians that are well meaning often have to be educated by their clients when it comes to their gender identities. This course is designed to facilitate consciousness-raising and depth of self-awareness of how gender socialization impacts and informs the therapeutic lens and therapeutic relationship. In this five hour session, participants will have opportunities for small group discussions and self-reflective activities to facilitate a depth of personal and professional understanding of how themes of gender inform clinical conceptualizations. Participants will also gain a nuanced understanding of the lived experience of transgender and non-binary individuals.

The purpose of this session is for mental health clinicians to examine how gender and socialization impacts their own life and their relationships with clients so that they can provide wholistic care and bring informed self-awareness into their sessions with transgender and non-binary clients.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain 3 elements of their lived experiences and socializations of gender identity and sexuality, and describe how these experiences may influence their treatment of gender-diverse clients.
  • Identify 5 areas of vulnerability or marginalization for transgender and non-binary clients
  • Name 5 aspects of cisgender privilege that impact the experience of marginalization and oppression for gender-variant clients.
  • Describe how to apply understanding of current affirming terms to the therapeutic process.
  • Create a plan for 2 new gender-affirming steps or practices that can be applied immediately to practice.

Sliding Scale Rates:

We want folks who want to attend to be able to do so, regardless of economic constraints, while also making sure that we are operating in accordance with our values of paying our trainers fairly for their time, energy and lived experiences, while using sustainable business practices.  (Please see our blog post here for a deeper dive into how we selected our sliding scale structure.)  The full cost of attendance is $275 per person. We set aside a certain number of Sliding Scale spaces, but when folks who can afford to pay more do (Benefactors), we are able to use the difference in price to make another sliding scale seat available to those in need at this or a future offering.  Please use our handy graphic to help determine your registration level

  • $275-$375 – 15+ seats available  (Full Price [$275] & Benefactor levels [$300, $325, $375])
