Understanding Trans and Non-Binary Identities – 2/16/22,12-2ET/9-11PT

February 16 @ 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

This session will cover foundational concepts, terminology, and basic strategies for supporting transgender and non-binary people.

Research has shown individuals who identify as transgender or non-binary face multiple areas of discrimination and minority stress. By proactively working to create a world that is affirming of transgender and non-binary people, we can help decrease the stigma, isolation, and rejection – and the related negative social, emotional, physical, and financial outcomes transgender and non-binary people experience in non-affirmative environments. In order to truly support transgender and non-binary people in our communities, it is essential that we have a strong understanding of what each of these identities means as well as the unique challenges faced by these individuals. During this session we will provide a strong foundation for better understanding the identities, experiences, and needs of community members who are transgender and non-binary, and participants will walk away better prepared to honor and affirm transgender and non-binary people’s experiences and identities.

This workshop will build a foundational understanding of transgender and non-binary identities and experiences, and the basics of affirming language and non-affirming language to avoid when communicating with and about transgender and non-binary people.
