Supporting Transgender Students Coming Out

Coming out can bring up a range of emotions for transgender and non-binary students. Many young folks don’t know who will accept them or where they will feel safe. While we can’t control the other environments in a young transgender or non-binary student’s life, educators can be a supportive and even life saving resource at school. This one-hour session is designed for educators who want to best support transgender and non-binary students when coming out. Together, we will explore how to establish trust, discuss best practice support strategies, and identify helpful virtual resources for transgender and non-binary students in your communities. Students often look to their educators for adult guidance and support. Studies show that having strong relationships can be protective factors for the long term health and safety of transgender and non-binary youth. Do you want to work towards being a safe and caring resource for your students at school? This workshop is for you!
This session will increase confidence amongst educators who are serving transgender students so they can help students navigate the coming out process in a school environment.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe 2 best practice strategies for supporting transgender and non-binary students coming out.
- Name 2 virtual resources that center the needs of transgender and non-binary youth.
