The Transgender Training Institute provides introductory, intermediate and advanced professional development trainings that are customized to help increase participants transgender cultural competency and skills. When booking trainings, we will ask questions about the goals and needs of your organization and audience, and will tailor our trainings according to your specific needs.
Our hallmark course, the Transgender Training of Trainers (TOT) is based on The Teaching Transgender Toolkit: A Facilitator’s Guide to Increasing Knowledge, Decreasing Prejudice & Building Skills. TOT participants will receive training in the current best practices in teaching transgender content, have opportunities to practice teaching, and will receive customized guidance to support implementation. Working with the materials in the book, this course helps prepare educators to implement the lesson plans included in the book and provide support around aspects of nuanced facilitation such as responding to Frequently Asked Questions, handling challenging participants, or managing resistance or social justice fatigue. Our trainings draw participants from all over the United States, and a wide variety of implementation settings, including: K-12 schools, diversity trainings, colleges and universities, public health organizations, direct service and community based organizations, and corporate environments. We host our Training of Trainers quarterly in Philadelphia, and in locations around the country based on request and demand. We also offer Training of Trainers for specific organizations and settings.
The Transgender Training Institute can create customized training curricula based on the specific needs and wants of your organization. We can design lessons and curricula for standalone online classes, standalone training sessions and longer-term courses. Our consultants are highly trained and experienced in curriculum design, best practices in education and training, and creating engaging, high impact lessons. Additionally, our consultants can provide an expert review of curricula that already established or in development to determine the degree and success of transgender inclusion. Our reviews offer areas of strength, areas of growth and concrete steps for moving forward. Depending on the project, we are also able to work directly on modifications to your curriculum to help ensure that it is inclusive and affirming of transgender people.
As trainers, we understand that when things get tricky or we get stuck, it can often be useful to discuss our work with others. We provide sliding scale technical assistance for fellow trainers and educators who are facilitating transgender-related content (regardless of gender identity). We can also provide supportive and constructive feedback on recorded sessions. Assistance can be provided via email, skype/facetime, or phone.
